Today, we ask our Falcon Family to remember the life and impact of former CMSD Superintendent Dr. Cherie Labat. It would be impossible to list all the contributions Dr. Labat made to the Columbus Municipal School District during her four years, but we will try. During her CMSD tenure, she supported the Teacher Incentive Pay Program, initiated the “We Build it Better” aviation program, implemented coding curriculum throughout the district, navigated CMSD through the uncertainty of COVID-19, secured FEMA and MEMA funds to repair the Hunt Campus, and increased our accountability rating for the first time in more than a decade. Dr. Labat fully immersed herself in the community by hosting engagement meetings with the Columbus Housing Authority and spearheading the Adopt-A-Block program in East Columbus. Today we want to remember Dr. Labat and all her accomplishments that helped move this district forward. May her memory be a blessing for all who knew her.

Student Spotlight! We want to highlight Columbus High senior Makiyah Burnett. Through McKellar's work-based learning program, Makiyah has been interning with Friendly City Books. As an intern, Makiyah helps stock and mail books, ensures the shelves are in order, sets up displays, helps decorate the store, and even reads and reviews new books. "We have really enjoyed having Makiyah at Friendly City Books this year," FCB owner Emily Liner said. "She has made a tangible impact expanding our used book section, and she's contributed her creativity to add some decorative flair around the bookstore. She has also had the opportunity to participate in our events and meet authors like Andy Harkness and Nyani Nkrumah, and she has a staff picks shelf alongside the rest of the team." Our work-based learning program helps high school students find their path to success after high school. After Makiyah graduates from CHS, she wants to study engineering and even build houses with 3D printers! Her love of reading, art, and design is what called her to intern with Friendly City Books and she said she's thankful for the opportunity and experience! We are proud of you, Makiyah and can't wait to see how you grow! #TogetherWeFly #StudentSpotlight #FalconProud

Join us December 15th - 16th for the LTC Alva Temple Flight Festival! It's going to be EPIC!!! Alva Temple, one of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, served the United States as a Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Air Force and one the first black pilots to fly in combat during World War II, made Columbus, MS his home for many years until his death in 2004. Temple completed 120 missions during World War II while serving in Italy, southern France and the Balkan nations. Temple trained at Tuskegee, Ala., as part of a program set up by the Pentagon during the war. The entire training was said to be quite rigorous with many added complications; 992 men graduated as Tuskegee Airmen. He was also the first to win the coveted ‘Top Gun’ award. Temple and his all-African American 332nd flight crew won the inaugural ‘Top Gun’ competition in 1949. LTC Alva Temple was a trailblazer in military aviation and a leader in the Tuskegee Airmen. His bravery and skill as a pilot, combined with his commitment to excellence and service, inspired generations of aviators and community leaders. Which is why, we want to honor LTC Alva Temple's legacy and the contributions of the Tuskegee Airmen to military aviation and American history. Their achievements serve as a reminder of the power of perseverance, dedication, and courage in the face of adversity. Everything we do is student-centered here at CMSD. We just held professional development for the use of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication Device). Through this training, we helped teachers, assistant teachers, speech pathologists, case managers, and even grandparents understand AAC devices and how we can communicate effectively with each student. #StudentCentered #ExcellenceDriven #FalconProud
